Constitutional Court Ruling Sparks Clash of Views: Deputy Press Secretary Criticizes Zaake's Justice Claims

Faruk Kirunda, the Deputy Press Secretary to the President, strongly criticized Francis Zaake, the legislator from Mityana Municipality, for repeatedly claiming that there is no justice in the country. Kirunda’s remarks came in response to a recent decision by the constitutional court that ruled in favor of Zaake and dismissed Speaker Anita Among’s decision to remove him as a Commissioner of Parliament.

Kirunda questioned the location of the Constitutional Court’s jurisdiction, asking if it was situated in Europe, Ghana, India, or Uganda, considering the ruling went in Zaake’s favor. He pointed out the contradiction in Zaake’s stance, as the legislator is a member of the opposition and has consistently asserted that there is no justice in Uganda.

After the court’s decision, Zaake expressed his appreciation for the same court he had previously accused of failing to deliver justice in Uganda. He commended the court for disciplining Speaker Among and emphasized that the legislative branch, responsible for making laws, should also respect the laws it creates. Zaake criticized Speaker Among’s conduct, stating that she had not adhered to the law and had brought shame to the Parliament of Uganda. He asserted that, according to the ruling, he still retained his position as a commissioner.

It’s worth noting that last year, Zaake lost his Parliamentary Commission seat following a vote, which was prompted by a motion to remove him due to allegations of misconduct. This vote followed a debate on the report of the committee of Rules, Discipline, and Privileges, which had found Zaake in breach of public trust and confidence. He was also investigated for statements he had made against Speaker Among on social media.
