Former Bank of Uganda Secretary, George William Nyeko, Passes Away at 68

KAMPALA, UGANDA: Mr George William Nyeko, the former Bank of Uganda Secretary, has passed away after a prolonged illness, according to family sources.

Nyeko, 68, who retired from his position at the Bank of Uganda in March 2015, breathed his last on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the International Hospital Kampala.

His son, Sam Otim, revealed that Nyeko had been battling with Liposarcoma, a rare type of cancer that develops in fatty tissue. The late Nyeko had been undergoing medical treatment since 2018 until his passing on Saturday evening.

Ms Susan Wasagali Kanyemibwa, the current Secretary at Bank of Uganda who succeeded Nyeko, paid tribute to the late Nyeko during a vigil held at his residence in Mutungo on Sunday evening. Ms Kanyemibwa expressed gratitude for the late Nyeko’s guidance and mentorship during her time working under him as the Director of Board Affairs.

“I stand here to give testimony that I am what I am today partly because of Mr Nyeko,” said Ms Kanyemibwa. “He gave hope to the hopeless at the Central Bank. He supervised and mentored me and threw me in the deep end, saying ‘you will sail’.”

Nyeko served the Bank of Uganda for approximately 32 years, holding various positions and ascending through the ranks during his tenure.
