Former Ugandan MP Mubarak Munyagwa Remanded on Charges of Malicious Damage to Property

Former Member of Parliament for Kawempe South Division, Hon Mubarak Munyagwa, has been remanded to Luzira prison in Kampala, Uganda. Munyagwa, along with four others, was arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit on charges of malicious damage to property and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The group, including Munyagwa, Paddy Kabuye, Joweria Nakafero, Godfrey Buwembo, and Isa Sekitoleko, appeared before Kajjansi Chief Magistrate, Doreen Karungi. They were charged with willfully and unlawfully destroying a cassava garden belonging to Janan Opio in Mutungo cell, Wakiso District, between May 26 and June 3, 2023. The cassava garden is estimated to be worth Shs5 million.

During the court proceedings, all the accused individuals pleaded not guilty to the charges. As a result, the magistrate ordered their remand until June 12, 2023.

Among the co-accused, Paddy Kabuye is the chairman of LC1 Bugu Zone in Busabala ward, Masajja Division, Wakiso District. Godfrey Buwembo is a 22-year-old student residing in Mirimu Zone, Ndejje Ward, Makindye Ssabagabo, Wakiso District. Isa Sekitoleko, aged 45, is a casual laborer residing in Makindye central zone, Makindye Sabagabo, Wakiso District. Joweria Nakafero, 41, is a resident of Masajja B Cell, Makindye Sabagabo, Wakiso District.

Currently, Munyagwa and his accomplices are detained at Kajjansi Police Station awaiting their next court appearance at the Kajjansi magistrate’s court. They are facing two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony.
