Two Rwanda Buses collide leaving scores injured

Authorities have reported that more than 20 people were seriously injured on Wednesday morning when two passenger buses collided head-on along the Ntungamo-Kabale Road in Ntungamo District.

The accident, which occurred at Katinda Bridge, approximately 12 km from Ntungamo Town, involved a Trinity company bus traveling from Kigali to Kampala and a Volcano company bus heading to Kigali from Kampala. Survivors and locals recounted that the collision happened at around 5:15 am.

One survivor, Daniel Mawanda, reported that the conductor’s leg was amputated, and two women were critically injured. Another woman lost both legs, and one lost a leg. Police did not have an exact count of the victims, but an on-scene officer estimated that at least 23 people were injured, with 12 in critical condition. The injured were taken to Doctor’s Referral Hospital in Rubaare Town and Itojo Hospital.

Eyewitnesses said the accident was caused by a misty road that could have obscured both drivers’ vision. The area is known to be a black spot, and four accidents have already occurred there this month.

The Ntungamo district police traffic and road safety officer attributed most of the accidents in the region to negligence and speeding.
