Uganda and Sudhir Ruparelia Collaborate to Build Modern Convention Centre for International Summits

The government of Uganda and businessman Sudhir Ruparelia are collaborating to construct a modern Convention Centre at Commonwealth Speke Resort Munyonyo, which will serve as the venue for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit.

To co-fund, the project, the Ministry of Finance has finalized the budget and requested supplementary funding for UGX. 86.4 billion from the Parliament.

The Convention Centre is also planned to host the South Summit of the G77 and China. The Budget Committee MPs have expressed their support for the project and are expected to approve the request.

The estimated construction cost for the project is around $40m (Shs 147b), and the architectural designs and bill of quantities are still being prepared.

Sudhir Ruparelia has provided the land and will oversee the technical aspects of the project. Finance Minister Matia Kasaija stated that the government lacked sufficient funds to construct its convention centre and needed a partner to provide the necessary financial resources.

The government and Sudhir Ruparelia will contribute funds towards the project and share profits once the Convention Centre starts generating income.
