Woman Killed by Collapsed Wall in Masaka City; Police Investigate Negligence by School Proprietor

An investigation is being carried out by the police in Masaka city following the collapse of a perimeter wall in Nyendo that led to the death of a 25-year-old woman named Betty Nabalonge.

The incident occurred at around 10 am when Nabalonge was walking past Centenary High School on her way back from her sister’s house to charge her mobile phone. The poorly maintained wall collapsed on her, causing her instant death.

It has been reported that residents had previously alerted the school administration about the wall’s poor condition, but their concerns were ignored. Yuda Ndyako, who was involved in constructing the wall, stated that they had requested hardcore stones from the school proprietor to ensure a strong foundation, but their request was not met.

After the incident, residents attempted to demolish the remaining part of the wall, but the police dispersed them using tear gas. The school proprietor will be charged with negligent behavior, according to the spokesperson for the greater Masaka region police, SP Twaha Kasirye.

Betty Nabalonge’s body was taken to the Masaka regional referral hospital for a post-mortem examination, and attempts by journalists to speak with the school administrators were unsuccessful as they were asked to leave the premises.
